Woodhaven Labrador's Feeding Routine

We get asked a lot about what we feed so I thought I would share our feeding routine. PLEASE NOTE: This is what WE do and doesn't mean that it would work best for your own dog. The use of any advice here is at your own risk, we suggest contacting a veterinarian before changing your dog's feeding routine or diet. The opinions expressed on this page are Woodhaven Labradors' alone and Woodhaven Labradors and/or their agents therefore cannot be responsible for anyone else reading this and trying their suggestions. You acknowledge by reading this that making any changes to your animals' feeding routine based on this page and its recommendations that you you do so at your own risk.

Since we are concerned about bloat, we feed our dogs twice a day. Our dogs get between 2 - 2½ cups of dry dog food per day divided between the 2 meals and moistened quickly with water. I believe that dry commercial foods need to be fed with moisture so dogs don't over consume water after a meal. Use tepid water never hot or warm. Don't let the water soak in, as it breaks down and destroys nutrients. Mix up and feed immediately. I personally prefer to feed a food that doesn't contain soy, by-products or chemical preservatives.

We put 1 tablet of OsteoBiFlex (or the Costco or Sams Club equivalent) in their bowls at each feeding. PLEASE NOTE: We do NOT supplement puppies with anything besides the OsteoBiFlex until they are fully grown (about 2 years). It is our contention that is one feeds a "name brand" AAFCO approved dog food, you do not need to supplement with anything besides the Glucosamine/Chrondritin.  The levels of G/C in dog foods is not enough to be theraputic.

For one afternoon meal twice a week, the dogs get a can of fish on their meal of dry food (kibble). Depending on what's on sale that week, the fish can be Jack Mackerel, Pink Salmon or Sardines. Try to buy the sardines in spring water, never in soybean oil. I buy the 15 oz. cans at the supermarket, open them, dump them in a colander to drain and rinse off and put them in the dog bowls. I dodge the Lab dancing as they wait for this meal and then get out of the way as they attack the contents of the bowls. These dogs just love their fish meals. Labs are originally from Newfoundland and to me it makes sense to feed them something that their ancestors grew up on. The fish also helps maintain the proper coat needed for a Labrador to be a Labrador.

I found out the hard way to work up to a full can per dog. The first time I fed the canned fish all the dogs had loose stools the next day. So the next week I split a can between 2 dogs slowly adding more fish each week until each dog was getting 1-15 oz. can of the sardines or mackerel. Be aware that if you do this, their feces will smell like fish the next day. Worth it though when you see the pleasure the dogs get from eating this and the benefits seen.
